The Uefa Champions League continues with matchday two starting on Tuesday night, as Manchester United get their first chance to play in front of their fans in the competition this season. They’ll be hosting Turkish side Galatasaray and looking to kick-start their European campaign having been beaten 4-3 by Bayern Munich in their opener.

At the same time, Galatasaray fought back from two goals down against Copenhagen to pick up a point, leaving Man United bottom in Group A after the first round of fixtures.

While the Red Devils therefore are in sore need of a victory, the form guide is strongly against them doing so – they’ve lost four of the last six including a home weekend defeat to Crystal Palace. Follow the latest news and updates from Man United vs Galatasary below and get the latest odds and tips here.

Erik ten Hag speaks about the errors in defeat to TNT:

“We were twice up and controlling the game, then some mental errors we make. You can’t allow it at this level, you get punished,” he said.

“This is difficult to control but we’re all together, it’s not only one such an error it’s as a team, so we don’t win the game. It’s totally unnecessary, we were in control and you don’t expect this outcome.

“We expect more together. The players with me, we all expect more.

“Hojlund played a very good game, he’s a threat all the way through but now we don’t win the game and so he’s disappointed.”

Ten Hag and United fall deeper into desperate mess of their own making

    22:40 , Karl Matchett

Three decades ago, when Manchester United were about to face Galatasaray, they were greeted with banners declaring ‘Welcome to Hell’. Thirty years on, United may have found hell: not in Istanbul, but in Manchester. A second home defeat in four days sent them spiralling into crisis.

So much for Raphael Varane’s assertion that they can win the Champions League. At this rate, bottom of the group, beaten six times in all competitions already this season, they may not even be playing in the Europa League after Christmas.

A 3-2 loss came courtesy of their own failings: of disastrous defending, of the indiscipline of the sent-off Casemiro, of the poor team selection of Erik ten Hag. Even a colossal contribution by Rasmus Hojlund, who scored twice, had another goal disallowed and provided a chance that Bruno Fernandes really should have taken, was obscured by United’s ineptitude.

Christian Eriksen pulls no punches in his assessment of Manchester United being very poor defensively to TNT:

“It’s sad, it’s a big disappointment. IT’s really quiet in the dressing room. We had some good spells in the game but at the moment when we score we always concede soon after. That makes it difficult and it has to change,” he said.

“I don’t think it’s confidence I think it’s awareness and sharpness to keep in front. We can’t keep throwing it away and we’ve done it before this season.

“The chances they have is from our mistakes, if you don’t make mistakes you don’t concede as we do. How we play is how we play.”

    Ongoing Zaha chat with TNT:

“The Champions League is played between the best and is where I want to play. It’s where I want to showcase myself and it’s where we want to be,” Zaha continued.

“They were thinking what’s going on with Zaha because I was injured when I arrived. But they kept sending me messages on social media and give me time, they know I can bring to the team. If they show me love, on the pitch I give it back in every action. It’s really helped me.”

Wilf Zaha speaks to TNT Sports:

“Dream come true. I’m happy to be playing in this competition and scoring as well so it’s a great night for me,” he said.

“I just wanted it to drop at a good enough level for me to hit. I’m glad it went in!

“I feel like the team has belief and one thing I do know is that even if we do go behind we carry on. Icardi’s up top, there’s quality there.”

Rio Ferdinand is utterly bemused at how bad his former club are defensively, speaking on TNT Sports.

“You think theres things to be positive about and then I’m left with my head in my hands,” he said.

“They are vulnerable, they go to sleep. Galatasaray go through like a hot knife in butter, this is the Champions League and you’re seeing not just mistakes but a lack of positional awareness. You’re going to get punished.”

Full time! Whistle from the ref, boos from the United fans, five defeats in seven for Erike ten Hag and his team.

Galatasaray move to four points for the group stage while United are rooted to the bottom with two defeats and no points.

A truly terrible performance from a defensive standpoint and a very damaging final 20 minutes, having gone 2-1 up midway through the second half.

    90+7’ – Man Utd 2-3 Galatasaray

    21:57 , Karl Matchett

Eriksen’s ball in is cleared, Galatasaray half break forward with the empty goal in mind but United win it back – only for Dalot to hand ball.

    That’s going to end things.

    90+5’ – Man Utd 2-3 Galatasaray

    21:56 , Karl Matchett

Last chances for United to get the ball into a good area. Hojlund tries to backheel the ball into Garnacho’s path from 20 metres away; predictably it doesn’t come off. Muslera gathers up but the ball out isn’t great; it comes back and Martial’s deflected shot forces a really good save by the veteran Uruguayan.

The offside flag goes up to deny United a chance at firing in the rebound.

Free-kick to United out on the left; one final chance to throw everything forward. Onana goes up.

    90+2’ – Man Utd 2-3 Galatasaray

    21:52 , Karl Matchett

Into stoppage time we go and Icardi has almost just wrapped up matters, putting one just wide.

It’s only the Galatasaray fans we can hear now, up in the corner, with United fans – having previously been loudly cheering their team on before Hojlund’s second – now almost silent.

Galatasaray haven’t won an away Champions League match in 17 attempts and haven’t won any at all in five years, we’re told.

They are about five minutes away from doing both here.

    88’ – Man Utd 2-3 Galatasaray

    21:50 , Karl Matchett

Fernandes is tugged down a few yards outside the box and United have a free-kick. Fernandes stands over it himself – they haven’t created a chance since Hojlund’s second goal so really need this…it’s straight into the wall. Disappointing from the captain who has been largely ineffective tonight in the final third.

    Seven minutes added on.

MUN sub: Anthony Martial on for Amrabat

    84’ – Man Utd 2-3 Galatasaray

    21:46 , Karl Matchett

We’ll presumably have a fair bit of stoppage time but otherwise we’re well inside the final ten. Subs for both teams here.

Bayern have turned it around in Denmark, they are 2-1 up. Arsenal are losing 2-1 to Lens, meanwhile.

GAL subs: Tanguy Ndombele for Angelino, Victor Nelsson for Kaan Ayhan

MUN sub: Antony on for Mount

    GOAL! 80’ – Man Utd 2-3 Galatasaray

    21:42 , Karl Matchett

What on earth are Manchester United doing?!

Icardi is on his own, central and about 40 yards out, a straight ball goes towards him and Amrabat is playing him on from left-back, the Argentine striker races clear, just about keeps control of the ball and flicks it over Onana who has gone down too early and it’s into the back of the net!

Missed a penalty a moment ago, score now and Galatasaray are 3-2 up!

    78’ – Man Utd 2-2 Galatasaray

    21:39 , Karl Matchett

Icardi drills it wide! Not a great penalty at all, he drags it slightly and it flies wide to the left, he’s left with his head in his hands and Onana has an escape.

But United are down to ten men and Casemiro will be suspended for a game afterwards, too.

What more can we get in the final ten minutes plus stoppage time?!

RED CARD AND PENALTY! 75’ – Man Utd 2-2 Galatasaray

    21:37 , Karl Matchett

A little over 15’ to play and United are once again having to push forward in search of a goal to earn the three points.

Casemiro is free from a corner but it’s just too high and he heads over – then up the other end, Onana’s pass out is intercepted and Casemiro scythes down Kerem in the box! Penalty, second yellow, red card!

    GOAL! 70’ – Man Utd 2-2 Galatasaray

    21:31 , Karl Matchett

And there is the equaliser they just threatened! United don’t learn, don’t pick up the runner and Kerem bursts through again, totally unmarked and buries his finish this time into the bottom corner. Atrocious lack of marking from the hosts and that’s 2-2!

    68’ – Man Utd 2-1 Galatasaray

    21:30 , Karl Matchett

So close to an immediate equaliser again for Kerem – Onana is left just watching as the ball flies an inche wide of his post.

MUN subs: Alejandro Garnacho for Rashford

    GOAL! 66’ – Man Utd 2-1 Galatasaray

    21:27 , Karl Matchett

One slip, goal! Davinson Sanchez loses his footing as a pass comes his way on the halfway line, Hojlund picks it up and sprints past the last defender, draws the keeper and dinks a beautiful finish over the goalkeeper and into the net!

Out of absolutely nothing, it’s United 2-1 Galatasaray.

    65’ – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    21:26 , Karl Matchett

Casemiro bundles his way into the box and a tackle sees the ball bounce up beautifully for Fernandes – but his half-volley is straight at Muslera, who saves and keeps hold. The referee has a bit of a word with the goalkeeper over some perceived time-wasting.

    62′ – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    21:22 , Karl Matchett

Torreira hasn’t recovered from whatever the issue was a moment ago and he’ll be heading off now. A cross from the right reaches Rashford and he nods on target, but it’s soft and easily saved. Good approach play by Eriksen, who replaced Hannibal at the break, then Mount finds himself with space to shoot…but it’s pulled wide of the near post.

GAL subs: Sergio Oliveira for Lucas Torreira and Baris Yilmaz on for Tete.

    59’ – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    21:19 , Karl Matchett

Hojlund thinks he’s put United 2-1 up but the offside flag is up early. Mount fizzes a pass around the corner and Hojlund dummies past Boey, then lashes into the roof of the net – but he’s just a pace beyond the defender when taking the pass and it’s the right call.

    Still 1-1.

    58’ – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    21:18 , Karl Matchett

Torreira is down and injured, needing attention in the Galatasaray penalty box. Not sure what happened with him but he’s got the physio on while United fans get frustrated and start to whistle from the stands.

Interesting latest score in Denmark: Lukas Lerager has put Copenhagen 1-0 up against Bayern.

    54’ – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    21:14 , Karl Matchett

What a chance! Zaha tries to dribble past Dalot and goes down in the box but it’s never a foul. United streak away down the right side, Rashford is behind the last two defenders and bearing down on the goalkeeper…but instead of opting to shoot he slows down and tries to square for Fernandes, but it’s a really poor ball and is cleared behind by Abdulkarim who is sprinting back.

    A real waste from Rashford.

From the corner Muslera is forced to tip over, then the second is cleared after the ball hits the referee.

    48’ – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    21:11 , Karl Matchett

Zaha attacks from the left and frees Kerem into the centre – but instead of taking a touch and shooting, he reverses the pass to Zaha who hasn’t continued his run and United can clear their lines.

Positive start to the second half from the visitors, then Fernandes attacks down the United right, cuts in and shoots left-footed – well off-target. Somewhat of a waste.

Wilfried Zaha has the same number of goals against Manchester United as games for Manchester United (4).

    46′ – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    21:05 , Karl Matchett

Back underway for the second half.

HT – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    20:57 , Karl Matchett

Seven shots to four in favour of United and 53% possession in their favour, but it’s hard to say they’ve been massively on top or should be in front. They’ve created just one chance since they scored in truth, Mount’s shot blocked by his own teammate, and Galatasaray have carried a threat of their own sporadically on the counter.

    An intriguing second half awaits.

HT – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    20:50 , Karl Matchett

All square as the whistle goes, Hojlund heading United ahead but Zaha equalising just a few minutes later.

In the group’s other fixture it’s Copenhagen 0-0 Bayern, still playing the first half as it stands.

Arsenal have reached the interval in France and are 1-1 with Lens.

    44’ – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    20:46 , Karl Matchett

Last minute. Rashford attacks Boey and crosses low, it’s half-cleared to Mount and he thinks he’s scored – but it’s a brilliant block… by Hannibal. Not quite the penalty box impact he’d be hoping for, denying his own teammate.

    Three minutes added on.

    41’ – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    20:42 , Karl Matchett

Hannibal goes in rather late for a 50-50 challenge and is lucky he doesn’t get booked too, Angelino displeased at the foul. Into the final few minutes of the first half at Old Trafford.

Casemiro fires a pass towards Rashford but it skids off the surface and runs to Muslera – lots of rain in this first 45 minutes and it’s impacting those attempted through balls.

    38’ – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    20:39 , Karl Matchett

Dalot is next into the book, diving in on Zaha and getting nowhere near the ball. Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk is also booked! Ref getting very animated.

Rashford twice then has the chance to deliver quality into the box but fails to do so. Muslera gathers easily and United will have to start again.

    34’ – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    20:36 , Karl Matchett

Immediately, the Brazilian follows the Uruguayan into the book. Casemiro goes in with a very high boot and catches Kerem in the head – easy yellow for the United man.

The visitors just looking a bit more involved and comfortable with their counter-attacking game since 1-1, though United are definitely still in the overall ascendency, even if Muslera hasn’t been unduly troubled.

    30’ – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    20:32 , Karl Matchett

Icardi thinks he might be through on the counter but the ref blows for a foul on Amrabat, who was covering as United were countered against.

Casemiro is then fouled by Torreira and the former Arsenal man is booked for the challenge.

    27’ – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    20:29 , Karl Matchett

Torreira thinks he’s fouled, Galatasaray players all stop, United carry on and a Casemiro strike is flying in – until it’s deflected and bounces wide.

Bit of an escape there for the Turkish team who all just seemed to be waiting for the whistle which didn’t come.

An eventful opening almost-third of the game so far.

Meanwhile it’s Lens 1-1 Arsenal in France.

    GOAL! 23’ – Man Utd 1-1 Galatasaray

    20:25 , Karl Matchett

The Turkish side level out of nothing!

Terrible defending once again from United – Dalot drops too deep for a simple long ball, Zaha gets goalside of him and then holds him off, then the volley strikes the full-back’s thigh, bounces over Andre Onana and into the net for 1-1!

    20’ – Man Utd 1-0 Galatasaray

    20:22 , Karl Matchett

Hojlund is almost in for a second goal and just about gets to the ball before Muslera, who has raced out of his box, but he can’t get enough of a touch and a defender is in place to sweep up and clear.

Galatasaray struggling to get a foothold on matters at present.

    GOAL! 16’ – Man Utd 1-0 Galatasaray

    20:19 , Karl Matchett

A long punt upfield finds Rashford racing down the right flank. He gets onto the ball with a good first touch and lashes the ball across the face of the six-yard box – where Rasmus Hojlund is powering in and bullets a header past Muslera and into the net.

There’s a VAR check but it’s pretty clear – Davinson Sanchez was easily playing Rashford onside.

    United lead, 1-0!

    12’ – Man Utd 0-0 Galatasaray

    20:16 , Karl Matchett

Galatasaray keeping United at bay for now but the pressure is definitely building.

Casemiro lofts a brilliant pass over the top which Hannibal races through for – but his first touch is disappointing and allows the ball to escape him. It’s still a corner but not quite what he would have wanted.

Elsewhere: Gabriel Jesus has rattled Arsenal 1-0 ahead at Lens

    8’ – Man Utd 0-0 Galatasaray

    20:11 , Karl Matchett

A short corner from United is not just a wasted opportunity but in the end a chance to counter-attack for the visitors. A race back by Dalot and Lindelof just about clears the lines but it briefly looked a good opening for Galatasaray.

    4’ – Man Utd 0-0 Galatasaray

    20:05 , Karl Matchett

Good early approach from United as Hojlund escapes down the left and crosses for Fernandes – but he doesn’t make a good connection and it flies wide.

A rabona ball in from Fernandes from the right could have been simpler made moments later and Galatasaray again clear their lines. Positive start from the hosts.

    1’ – Man Utd 0-0 Galatasaray

    20:02 , Karl Matchett

Kick-off! Underway at Old Trafford. No room for mistakes tonight, United need the result or it will quickly become a difficult-looking group to escape.

The players are in the tunnel and set to come out. It should be a big noise and atmosphere for them – but that won’t exactly be an intimidation factor for Galatasaray of course, given their own home crowd on occasions.

United need to be inspired by it though, that’s for sure. We’re about ready to get started!

He is named among the subs for the Champions League clash with Turkish side Galatasaray, which takes place at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

PGMOL release audio and review findings after Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal for Liverpool

    19:15 , Karl Matchett

The refereeing body, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), have released another statement surrounding what happened for the disallowed Luis Diaz goal for Liverpool in their defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League at the weekend.

Clarifying that a review has taken place, PGMOL also released a further statement along with the audio between match officials from that fixture, saying that “key learnings and immediate actions taken” had been sent on to the Anfield club and the rest of the Premier League, which features an improved communication protocol and double-checking outcomes between the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and the assistant of the same role.

Additionally, the FA along with the refs’ body has opted to “review the policy” of allowing officials to take charge of fixtures outside of their usual appointed domestic and international or intercontinental ones, after further criticism as it emerged Simon Hooper and his team – those involved in the Tottenham vs Liverpool match – were on duty in a UAE-based fixture just 48 hours earlier.

During the released audio file the exchange between officials can be heard as they follow the play through to its culmination – Diaz scoring – and then arranging the 2D line to check his position.

Once the line is touching the defender’s boot and shows Luis Diaz onside by a significant distance, VAR Darren England says out loud: “And stop, check complete, check complete. That’s fine, perfect.” The audio and video then show the match resuming, until the Replay Operator steps in to say “Wait, the on-field decision was offside.” He then questions if “Daz” – Darren England – is “happy” with the outcome of play continuing, with England not appearing to immediately grasp the situation before swearing when he realises the magnitude of his error.

‘No excuse’ for Man United to lose at home to Crystal Palace, says Erik ten Hag

    18:53 , Karl Matchett

Erik ten Hag said he understood the supporters who booed Manchester United off after their 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace and admitted there was no excuse for the result.

United suffered a fifth defeat already this season and a second in as many league games at Old Trafford after Joachim Andersen scored for Roy Hodgson’s team.

And Ten Hag said: “I understand. When we played at home we play Crystal Palace, we have to win. With all respect, I know every game in is very difficult, you have to play your best and I understand fans expecting a win and we didn’t win. We lost.”

The United manager was reluctant to use mitigating factors to try and justify a disappointing result and their inconsistent start to the campaign.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly considering minority stake bid for Manchester United

    18:38 , Karl Matchett

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is considering changing his bid and buying a minority stake in Manchester United, according to reports.

Ineos founder Ratcliffe, who had attempted to buy Chelsea last year, joined the race to purchase United in January and had been the sole bidder before Sheikh Jassim entered the running a month later.

A lengthy takeover saga has followed with numerous bids entered by both boyhood fan Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim, but no progress has been made over any potential change of ownership from the Glazer family, who announced in November they were open to selling the club.

Manchester United’s valuation on the New York Stock Exchange plummeted by more than £500million last month in the wake of reports the Glazers may not sell.

Raphael Varane reveals formula for Manchester United to claim Champions League glory

    18:30 , Karl Matchett

Raphael Varane has won the Champions League more often than Manchester United have. Which, given Europe’s importance to United’s identity, is an indication of the Frenchman’s success in his time at Real Madrid. It ought to mean few are more qualified to discuss what it takes the secure the club game’s most prestigious prize.

And, on the face of it, United scarcely look candidates. Languishing 10th in the Premier League, defeated in their last two top-flight games at Old Trafford and fortunate to only be beaten 4-3 by Bayern Munich in their Champions League opener this season, they have not reached the competition’s semi-final since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. They have only progressed to two quarter-finals in the subsequent 10 years: once under David Moyes, once with an almost surreal conclusion to a visit to Paris Saint-Germain under then caretaker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Neither their stuttering start to the season nor their decade of disappointment bodes well but Varane argued they can win the competition.

Sheikh Jassim makes Manchester United takeover decision as Sir Jim Ratcliffe considers new bid

    18:24 , Karl Matchett

The Qatari businessman Sheikh Jassim still wants to buy Manchester United outright after Sir Jim Ratcliffe considered altering his bid to take a minority stake in the club.

United have been up for sale since last November when the owners, the Glazer family, announced a strategic review.

Sheikh Jassim, a banker, and the British petrochemicals billionaire Ratcliffe, through his company Ineos, have emerged as the two most persistent bidders, submitting offers that have valued the club at around £5bn. The Glazers are thought to want more.

Ratcliffe, a lifelong United supporter, had proposed buying a majority stake in a deal which would have left the Glazers with a stake in the club their late father, Malcolm, acquired in a leveraged buyout in 2005. Two of the six Glazer siblings – Joel and Avram – are thought to be particularly keen not to sell up completely.

The club’s stuttering start to the Premier League season has since continued with an unconvincing win over Burnley followed by a narrow home defeat to Crystal Palace.

Galatasaray, conversely, are yet to lose in the league this season and took a point from their Group A opener against FC Copenhagen.
